ISSN 1806-9959 versión online

The Brazilian Journal of Botany is a periodical published by the Sociedade Botânica de São Paulo - SBSP reporting the results of original botanical research written in English.

Preparation of manuscripts

Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before; that it is not under consideration for publication in any other journal; that its publication has been approved by all of the co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities - tacitly or explicitly - at the institute where the work was carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation. Authors are responsibles for all the informations contained in their papers.

The complete manuscript (including figures and tables) must be sent to the Editor-in-Chief online ( All manuscripts are peer-reviewed, and their acceptance depends on the decision of the Editorial Board. Manuscripts should only contain information essential to understanding their content. Articles longer than 15 printed pages (approximately 30 typed pages, including figures and tables) may be published at the discretion of the Editorial Board, although the author(s) will be charged for extra pages. The costs of color figures in the printed version, if approved by the Editorial Board, will also be charged to the author(s). Colour art is free of charge for online publications. Scientific notes should represent original contributions to scientific research. Instructions for organizing scientific notes are the same as described for complete articles; they should not exceed 10 typed pages including up to three figures or tables. Review papers can be solicited by the Editorial Board.

Instructions to the Authors

The Brazilian Journal of Botany (BrazJBot) is a periodical published by the Sociedade Botânica de São Paulo (SBSP) reporting the results of original botanical research as complete articles or scientific notes in English. Either British English or American English spelling and terminology may be used, but must be consistent throughout the text.

Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout, with consecutive page numbering. Use Word for Windows 2000 (or later versions), font Times New Roman, size 12. Place only one space between words and do not hyphenate them at the end of a line. Do not use tabulation (Tab key) except at the beginning of each paragraph. Do not use bold or underline (except in subtitles). Restrict italics to scientific names, descriptions or diagnosis of new taxa, the names and numbers of collectors, and for genetic or statistical symbols.

Manuscript format

First page - Title: concise and informative (in bold); authors' full names (in capital letters); affiliation, complete address, corresponding author and respective e-mail, all as footnotes; running title.

Second page - ABSTRACT (include title), Key words (up to 5, in alphabetical order without repeating any title words).

Text - Start a new page each according to the following sequence of items: INTRODUCTION, MATERIAL AND METHODS, RESULTS, DISCUSSION, and REFERENCES. Acknowledgements should be placed before the references.

First-level headings - capitalize the first letter, bold, not centered.

Second-level headings- italic, bold, same font as the first-level heading, followed by the text on the same line but separated by dash (-).

Do not use third-level headings.

Cite each figure and table in the text in numerical order.

Present references according to the following examples: Smith (1960) or (Smith 1960); Smith (1960, 1973); Smith (1960a, b); Smith & Gomez (1979) or (Smith & Gomez 1979); Smith et al. (1990) or (Smith et al. 1990); (Smith 1989, Liu & Barros 1993, Araujo et al. 1996, Sanches 1997).

In taxonomic papers, cite botanical material in detail in the following sequence: place and date of collection, collector's name and number, and herbarium abbreviation, according to the samples below: BRAZIL. Mato Grosso: Xavantina, s.d., HS Irwin s.n. (HB3689). são Paulo: Amparo, 23-XII-1942, JR Kuhlmann & ER Menezes 290 (SP); Matão, BR 156, 8-VI-1961, G Eiten et al. 2215 (SP, US).

All other papers should cite vouchers.

Authors of scientific names of vascular plants should be abbreviated according to IPNI ( Species author(s) name(s) should be included when first mentioned in the text; in the title only when essential. Abbreviations of original works on taxonomy must follow BPH.

References to unpublished results or submitted papers should appear as follows: (SE Sanchez, unpublished data).

Provide numbers and units as follows:

- Numbers up to nine should be written in full, except if followed by units, or if indicating tables or figures (Examples: 21 L, 20.32 mg, Table 1).

- Separate units from values by placing a space (except for percentages, or geographical degrees, minutes and seconds); use abbreviations whenever possible.

- For compound units, use exponentiation, not slash (Example: mg day-1 instead of mg/day, μmol min-1 instead of μmol/min).

Do not insert spaces to move to the next line if the unit does not fit into the same line. Do not insert figures into the text file.

Adopt the format used in the examples as follows:

Cite dissertations or theses only in exceptional cases, when the information provided is essential for a better understanding of the paper, and when the information has not been published as a scientific paper. In this case, use the format below:

Sano PT. 1999. Revisão de Actinocephalus (Koern.) Sano - Eriocaulaceae. Tese de doutorado, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo.

Do not cite meeting abstracts.

Use Word for Windows design resources and table formatting.

Avoid abbreviations (except for units).

Tables should be placed on separate pages, with their titles positioned above them, according to the example:

Table 1. Total flavonoids and total phenol production (% of dry mass) in leaves of Pyrostegia venusta.

Do not insert vertical lines; use horizontal lines only to stress the header and close the table.

Submit a set of high-resolution original figures. Send digital images with a minimum of 300 dpi. Send the original file (in a CorelDraw, Photoshop, or similar format) as well as a .tif file of each digital image. The space available for plates (photographs, drawings, charts, maps, or diagrams) is 23.0 × 17.5 cm at most, including when possible the space required for the legend. Any figure exceeding these dimensions will be resized. These should never be attached to MS Word or Power Point files. Charts or other figures may be reduced to fit into a single column (8.5 cm); therefore, be sure that the numbers or font sizes will remain visible even after reduction. The font type and size of both the legends and charts should be the same as used in the text. Charts and figures made using Excel spreadsheets must be accompanied by the file with the original sheet. Each plate must appear on a separate page. Type all figure legends together (numbered sequentially) on another page. Use bar scales to indicate size. Bar scales should be placed at the bottom of the page on the left hand side. The right hand side should contain the figure number. Avoid the use of letters that are used for internal legends. Failure to correctly follow these instructions concerning illustrations may result in poor quality figures in the printed version; in such cases, the Editorial Board can decide on their elimination or the rejection of manuscripts already accepted. Each figure should have a concise caption accurately describing what the figure depicts. Include the captions in the text file of the manuscript, not in the figure file.

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both printed and online formats, and to include evidence that such permission was granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without these qualifications will be assumed to be original.

Additional information

Details of manuscript organization can be found in the final pages of every journal issue. For further information, refer to the journal’s latest issue. The authors will only be informed of the final acceptance of a paper after its approval by the Editorial Board, both in terms of scientific merit and graphic format.
